If you don’t find the real causes behind your blood sugar struggles — even if you are taking medications , you are still at an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, nerve problems, vision loss and premature death.
We are here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be that way! If you are diabetic or prediabetic and dream about regaining your health and the difference it would make in your life, we can help you make those dreams a reality*. At Integrative Wellness Centers, we are dedicated to helping you achieve optimal health. Our approach has already helped hundreds of patients stabilize their blood sugars, reduce or eliminate medications, lose weight and feel like a million bucks*!
How do we do it? By finding and healing the root causes that are behind your high blood sugar (or high blood pressure or cholesterol), not just lowering your blood sugars with prescriptions. The reasons why someone is diabetic or prediabetic are complex and unique, which is why the one-size-fits-all approach most traditional doctors use doesn’t work. It’s also why diabetes will only worsen over time if the real causes of your condition aren’t addressed and treated.
Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. An estimated 30.3 million people, or 9.4 percent of the U.S. population, including 25 percent of people ages 65 and older, have diabetes. (1) That’s almost one out of every 10 Americans who is diabetic! On top of that, another 84.1 million Americans have prediabetes, a condition that can lead to Type 2 diabetes within five years if it’s not treated. (2) That means there are more than 100 million U.S. adults currently living with diabetes or prediabetes.
This epidemic is even more staggering when you realize diabetes is not a “stand-alone” condition, but something that affects the entire body. If you have diabetes, you’re at increased risk of serious health problems including heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, vision loss and amputation of your toes, feet, or legs. (3) Diabetes is now the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. (4)
Diabetes is not only harmful to your physical health, but your financial health, as well. People who have been diagnosed with diabetes have medical expenditures 2.3 times higher on average than what their expenditures would be if they didn’t have diabetes. (5) The highest burden of medical costs from diabetes is among people 65 years and older, which is contributing to a growing economic cost to Medicare. (6) The average medical expenditure of someone with diabetes is $16,750 per year, with $9,600 of that amount attributable to diabetes alone. (7) Imagine what you could do with an extra $10,000 a year that you didn’t have to spend on medical costs for managing diabetes. Now, multiply that over 5, 10 or 20 years – we’re talking a car, vacations, even a house!
These costs illustrate a clear problem: Traditional doctors are dishing out medications to help control diabetes and associated problems such as high blood pressure, but aren’t asking the million-dollar question: “Why is the patient having issues with blood sugar in the first place?” I can guarantee you the answer is not a lack of pharmaceuticals. No one has ever walked into our offices with a pharmaceutical deficiency!
Remember, medications don’t fix the problems, they only cover the problems. In fact, some medications can make things worse. Take statins, for example. These drugs, intended to lower cholesterol, are prescribed to an estimated 32 million people, including half of all men ages 65 to 74 and 39 percent of women ages 75 and older. (8) But if you’re taking a statin, you might be getting more than you bargained for: Recent research found that statin use is associated with a nearly 50 percent higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and that statins can increase insulin resistance and impair the pancreas’s ability to secrete insulin. (9) Trading lower cholesterol for diabetes is not a very good deal, is it?
Medications can also cause undesirable side effects such as fatigue and weight gain, which is counterproductive when you’re struggling with diabetes or prediabetes. Most patients who have high blood sugar are told by their doctors to lose weight, maybe given a brochure or handout, and sent on their way. But weight loss isn’t that simple, is it? Getting a brochure and a prescription but not any real guidance or answers can leave you feeling on your own and alone.
We need to stop this madness! There is a reason the body is struggling with blood sugar imbalances, but if you’re just taking medications, those reasons are being ignored. Eventually, because the body isn’t truly healing, medications are increased and you may end up on insulin, still not losing weight and feeling even worse.
The simple truth is this: If you don’t find the real causes behind your blood sugar struggles — even if you are taking medications — you are still at an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, nerve problems, vision loss and premature death. You are not changing your fate, because you are not addressing the root causes of your blood sugar imbalances.
At our office, we want to help you change your fate. We recognize that your symptoms — fluctuating blood sugar levels, low energy and extra weight — aren’t the problems, but that what needs to be addressed are the underlying reasons you’re having symptoms in the first place. We know that blood sugar imbalances aren’t just about the pancreas – in fact, it’s rarely one organ or system that causes the problem. Your thyroid, adrenal glands, liver, immune, digestive and other systems all can play a role, as can the foods you eat and your external environment.
